Oily Skin

Like dry skin, Oily Skin is the result of genetics. There is an over activity of the sebaceous glands which are controlled by the masculine hormone in our body, androgen. The oil glands are literally working overtime, secreting an excessive amount of sebum.

Oily skin generally has a rough, shiny, thick appearance sometimes likened to an orange peel. Due to the excessive amounts of oil being secreted, pores tend to be enlarged. Additionally, the combination of dead corneocyte (surface cells) and sebum result in a propensity toward comedones (blackheads and whiteheads). The oily shine, signature blemishes on the chin and forehead, as well as its thick texture can present an appearance of a dirty, neglected complexion.

Hot and humid climates can exacerbate the condition. There have also been indications that diet, hot-spicy foods, may play a role as well. Individuals with this skin type often have a misconception that lying in the sun or using tanning beds will help their condition. While this may cause a temporary lessening in the appearance of oil and smoothing out of the skin, it in fact leads the sebaceous glands to think they are not working hard enough. Soon oil production increases even more rapidly than its initial overactive rate.
