Aging Skin
There are two classifications used to identify aging. They are
Intrinsic Aging and Extrinsic Aging.
Intrinsic aging, has to do with our hereditary genes and the normal aging process. Extrinsic aging has to do with our environment and
lifestyle choices. As we age, the body desires less water, and absorbs and binds less water. This slows down cellular activity
and affects all aspects of our being. There is a definite loss of elasticity and skin firmness due to the loosening
of fibroblast in the dermis. The thinning, drying and dehydration of the skin brought about through loss of
moisture and oil reduction result in lines and wrinkles on the skin.
The complexion pales to a more translucent, grayish tone as melanin production diminishes. These conditions are all characteristic of intrinsic aging.
Depending upon the individual's genes, they may appear at an earlier or later stage of maturity.
Additionally, environmental factors play a significant role in slowing or advancing the aging process. These
factors include excessive sun exposure, stress, smoking, pollution, hormonal imbalances, poor diet and
nutrient absorption, lack of sleep, and inadequate water in-take.
