Acne
Acne is non-discriminating in its selection of individuals. It affects all ages, all races and all nationalities.
Technically, acne can be diagnosed with the presence of comedones. However, unless there's an excessive
number of blackheads and whiteheads this diagnosis is usually reserved for the appearance of papules,
pustules, nodules and cysts. The cause of acne is considered to be hereditary. There are four factors influencing the acne pathogenesis:
- Androgen hormones
- Excessive cellular keratinization and clogging in the corneum layer and the sebaceous follicle
- Oil production
- Overpopulation of the bacterium known as Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes)
Depending upon the type of acne, medical supervision may be warranted. In the case of cystic acne and
Rosacea, individuals should consult with their dermatologist for care.
